The West and Central Africa Education and Research Network (WACREN) is seeking to recruit a candidate for the position of CEO to lead the organization in strengthening its activities in the service of research, higher education and digital innovation in West and Central Africa.

About WACREN

WACREN is a regional organization dedicated to the development and management of digital infrastructures and innovative services for universities, research centers and educational institutions in West and Central Africa. In collaboration with local and international partners, WACREN works to offer connectivity solutions and digital platforms supporting scientific collaboration, open science and equitable access to research and education resources.

Role and Responsibilities of the CEO

Under the supervision of the Board of Directors, the WACREN CEO will be responsible for the operational, infrastructural and strategic direction of the organization. His/her main responsibilities include:

  • Operational Management : Ensure effective management of operations, budget, and teams, and guarantee transparent and efficient management of resources.
  • Partnership Development : Establish and strengthen partnerships with regional and international organizations, governments, as well as the private sector to maximize resources and opportunities.
  • Digital Infrastructure Innovation : Promote innovative solutions and develop WACREN’s technological capabilities to meet emerging research and education needs.
  • Network expansion : strengthen WACREN’s network infrastructure to make the network more efficient and resilient.
  • Representation and Advocacy : Act as WACREN’s spokesperson in national, regional and international forums, and defend the network’s interests with various stakeholders.
  • Strategic Leadership : Develop and implement a strategic vision for WACREN in alignment with the network’s regional and global development objectives.

Profile of the ideal candidate

The ideal candidate for this position must possess the following qualifications and skills:

  • Advanced degree : Master’s or PhD in a relevant field, such as engineering, information technology, management or a related field.
  • Managerial experience : Minimum of 10 years of experience in a management position, with management experience in a regional or international context preferred.
  • Expertise in digital infrastructures : Solid understanding of research and education networks, information technologies and management of complex projects in a multicultural environment.
  • International Relations Skills : Proven experience in developing strategic partnerships with academic organizations, public institutions and industrial partners.
  • Communication and advocacy skills : Excellent interpersonal skills and experience in high-level institutional representation.
  • Languages : Fluency in English or French as a first language and a good knowledge of French or English as a second language is strongly desired.
