In the last couple of years, the Library Support for Embedded NREN Services and E-infrastructure (LIBSENSE) has been engaging in a number of coordinated activities and initiatives to support the advancement of open science and open access in Africa.

Guided by its strategic pillars, LIBSENSE has been fostering the relationship between National Research and Education Networks (NREN), university leaders, researchers and library communities and building communities of practice and strengthening local and national services to support open science and research in Africa.

With a thriving community of open science actors at the institutional, national, regional and continental levels, through various engagements, capacity-building sessions and advocacy efforts, it is time to connect all the steps and outcomes to create a well-defined future for open science in Africa.

In light of this, WACREN 2022 with its theme: ‘Open Science in Africa – Connecting the Dots’ will convene the community, stakeholders and decision-makers in Abidjan to share ideas and exchange knowledge on the topic.

The pre-Conference sessions have been dedicated to exploring a suitable framework and path for open science at the national level, regional and continental. The National Open Science Symposium jointly organised by a cluster of partners in Côte d’Ivoire will focus on national policy development, capacities and infrastructure. There will also be a Regional Policy Development Workshop geared towards discussing the co-creation of a regional open science policy by key stakeholders across the WACREN region.
