The WACREN vision is to leverage advanced networking and scholarly communication technologies to deliver innovative services tailored to the needs of research and education users in the region. Designed from the onset with the needs of members in mind, the offered services are aligned with global best practices, provide secure tools for end-users to communicate and collaborate seamlessly and differentiate research networks from commodity Internet service providers.
WACREN operates a high-speed network backbone connecting National Research and Education Networks (NREN) in the region. While affordable high-capacity dedicated bandwidth remains a key objective, the ultimate goal is to complement it with specialised value-added services and other components of research infrastructure needed for a digital transformation of research and education in the region.
The WACREN Global Transit Service (GTS) provides robust IP interconnectivity.
WACREN operates a cloud-hosted platform based on Zoom software which provides video conferencing.
WACREN allows NRENs to provide secure access for their communities across network boundaries.
Connected WACREN members are provided with network monitoring and management services.
The WACREN Network Operating Centre provides threat intelligence feeds for security policy enforcement.
WACREN can provide hosting of domains on behalf of NREN beneficiaries.
The network operation centre (NOC) is at the heart of NREN infrastructure, a vital piece providing services.
Capacity building in WACREN is an iterative social program that engages the NREN and its community.
The TrustBroker Africa Service (TBA) is an extension of the cybersecurity service offered by WACREN and the NREN CSIRT development program (OCF MoU).
