WACREN is pleased to announce the appointment of Ernest Kwame Anokye as its new Chief Technology Officer (CTO), effective 1 July 2026. In this role, Kwame will provide strategic leadership for WACREN’s technology, policy, and service development, overseeing the organisation’s technical infrastructure and driving innovation to support research and education networks across West and Central Africa.

Kwame joins WACREN with over 15 years of experience in telecommunications and digital infrastructure development at both national and regional levels. His appointment comes at a critical time as WACREN continues to strengthen its world-class network infrastructure, expand advanced services, and deepen collaboration among research and education communities across Africa and beyond.

Prior to joining WACREN, Kwame served as Chief Technology Officer at Afriwave Telecom Ghana Limited for nine years, where he led the design and operation of Ghana’s Interconnect Clearing House (ICH), the shared national infrastructure responsible for routing all domestic voice traffic and a significant share of international incoming traffic. During his tenure, he also directed the rollout of a US$42 million fibre backbone across eight regions in Ghana and managed technical operations across multiple West African countries.

Kwame has also held senior technical positions at Huawei Technologies and Nokia, where he gained extensive expertise in next-generation network architecture, service governance, and multi-operator deployments across Ghana, Uganda, The Gambia, Sierra Leone, Liberia, and beyond. His broad experience in network systems, cybersecurity, and technical governance aligns closely with WACREN’s mission to build resilient, future-ready digital infrastructure for research and education.

He holds a BSc in Computer Engineering and an MSc in Strategic Management and Leadership, and is certified as a Certified Information Systems Auditor (CISA) and an (ISC)² Certified in Cybersecurity (CC).

WACREN is confident that Kwame’s leadership and technical expertise will strengthen the organisation’s capacity to deliver cutting-edge network services, build technical capacity across the region, and advance its vision of a connected and collaborative research and education ecosystem in West and Central Africa.
