GAMREN draws inspiration from GARNET’s success

The Gambian Research and Education Network (GAMREN), represented by Dr. Mbemba Hydara, has completed a four-day study visit to the Ghana Academic and Research Network (GARNET) under the WACREN NREN CEOs Exchange Programme. This initiative, supported by the AfricaConnect3 project, aims to foster knowledge exchange among National Research and Education Networks (NRENs) within the WACREN region.

The visit focused on learning from GARNET’s remarkable journey toward becoming a stable and impactful NREN, delivering essential services to its growing community while maintaining strong relationships with its stakeholders. GARNET’s CEO, Lucas Chigabatia, provided valuable insights into key areas such as governance, strategic planning, infrastructure and service delivery, risk management, resource mobilisation, and sustainability.

Dr. Mbemba Hydara reflected on the visit, stating, “The topics were adequately scoped and highly relevant to GAMREN’s ongoing implementation efforts. While there are notable model differences between GARNET and GAMREN, the shared commonalities offer significant lessons and best practices to consider. Mr. Lucas and his team provided a comprehensive understanding of what it takes to establish a national REN on solid ground.”

Dr. Hydara also attended GARNET’s Annual Conference and AGM, held at the Regional Maritime University in Tema, Ghana, as part of the exchange. This collaboration exemplifies the value of shared knowledge and mutual support among WACREN members, strengthening the collective capacity of African NRENs to advance research and education across the continent.
