The African Research and Education Network (REN) community has paid tribute to Dr. Boubakar Barry, the pioneering CEO of WACREN, whose visionary leadership profoundly shaped the continent’s higher education and research networks. Dr. Barry, who passed away in September 2024, was remembered for his transformative contributions and unwavering dedication to advancing Africa’s REN landscape. Tributes poured in from across the globe, and his legacy was celebrated at major conferences, including UbuntuNet-Connect 2024 in Dar es Salaam, where a WACREN delegation, led by Board Chair and Interim CEO Dr Eyouleki Palanga, delivered a heartfelt tribute in his honour, and eAGE 2024 in Tunis. WACREN’s Board also sent a high-level delegation to Dakar for Dr. Barry’s final funeral rites. The delegation, led by Dr Pierre Traoré (Board Member and CEO of MaliREN), included Chief Strategy Officer Omo Oaiya, former Board Chair Prof. Nii Narku Quaynor, and other senior WACREN representatives.
